Will the Friends Have to Pack Their Boxes? Spoiler: No. But Their Building Just Changed Owners…

The legendary apartment building from Friends, located at 90 Bedford Street in New York City’s West Village, has just sold for $32.7 million (around €30 million). Yes, that building—the one where Monica, Rachel, Joey, and Chandler lived across the hall from each other for ten seasons… without ever complaining about the rent.

There was, of course, a reason for that. Monica and Rachel were living in Monica’s grandmother’s apartment, which was under New York City rent control—saving them from paying what would otherwise have been a truly eye-watering amount.

Naturally, the characters are fictional, the show was filmed on a soundstage in California, and no purple couch was included in the sale. Still, that hasn’t stopped thousands of fans from flocking to the building every year, treating it like a sacred sitcom landmark.

The Home of Monica, Rachel, Chandler & Joey

Built at the end of the 19th century, the building contains 21 apartments—all currently occupied. So unless you’re incredibly lucky, don’t expect to move in anytime soon… even with a chef’s salary or a part-time masseuse job.

Bottom line: the Friends aren’t moving out, Central Perk is safe—but at $32.7 million, it’s suddenly very clear why Monica fought so hard to keep that apartment.
