A slightly too furry stowaway caused mid-air panic aboard a KLM flight between Amsterdam and the Caribbean. On Wednesday, December 10, while the plane was calmly cruising over the ocean, a very large rat decided it was the perfect moment to leave its hiding place and take an unscheduled stroll through the cabin — much to the shock of passengers.
Filmed by travelers and quickly going viral, the scene shows the rodent in full acrobat mode: walking along curtain rails, leaping onto overhead luggage compartments, and generally enjoying the view at 30,000 feet. Economy class, with a complimentary adrenaline rush.
No one knows how the animal managed to board without a ticket. “Discovered over the ocean, it really wasn’t ideal timing,” a company spokesperson admitted. As for the pilot, there was little choice: turning back wasn’t an option. Rat or no rat, the flight had to go on.
Was the Rat alone ?
There was at least one piece of good news. Despite roaming freely, the rat showed impeccable manners and stayed away from the meal trays. Passengers remained calm, the crew kept a close eye on the situation, and the rodent completed its journey without ordering a drink.
Upon arrival in Aruba, the aircraft was grounded and the next leg of the trip was canceled. Official reason: a full cleaning, complete disinfection, and likely a collective emotional recovery. As a result, 250 passengers were put up in hotels overnight while KLM reassured everyone that “the safety and well-being of passengers remain our top priority.”
The rat, meanwhile, has yet to give a press conference.
