It’s a small revolution for M&M’s fans. After 85 years on the market, the famous chocolate candies will soon be sold in the United States in a new version made without artificial food coloring.
M&M’s have remained largely unchanged for nearly a century, making this one of the biggest transformations in the brand’s history. The iconic candies are now being produced using only natural color ingredients.
However, the change comes with an unexpected consequence: the blue and brown M&M’s will temporarily disappear from the packs. Mars has not yet found a natural solution capable of reproducing these two colors on an industrial scale.
Researchers have successfully recreated the red, yellow, orange, and green colors using natural ingredients such as beetroot and turmeric. Blue, however, remains a major technical challenge. Tests using spirulina have proven too complex and costly for large-scale production.
Will the Missing Colors Return?
More than 100 people are currently working on the project, which has already required investments worth several million dollars. Mars insists that the disappearance is only temporary and hopes to bring back all six historic colors by 2028.
In the meantime, American consumers will soon discover a new generation of M&M’s missing two of their most recognizable colors. A historic disappearance that is already generating plenty of buzz.
