Former US President Barack Obama has reignited public curiosity about extraterrestrial life after stating that aliens are “real,” while adding that he has no idea where they might be. In an interview released Saturday, he answered a question from YouTuber Brian Tyler Cowen about whether aliens exist.

Obama said the aliens are real but pushed back on conspiracy claims suggesting they are being hidden at Area 51, the highly secretive US Air Force facility in Nevada.

“They’re real,” he said, further adding, “…but I haven’t seen them, and they’re not being kept in, Area 51.”

“There’s no underground facility, unless there’s this enormous conspiracy, and they hid it from the president of the United States.”

What is Area 51?

Area 51 has for decades been linked to stories about aliens and unverified UFO sightings. The US government officially confirmed the base’s existence only in 2013. It is widely believed to be used for testing advanced military aircraft.

Obama’s remarks come at a time of rising attention around Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs), the official term now used by the government for UFOs. The Pentagon has set up the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) to review UAP reports, and Congress has approved laws requiring greater public disclosure about such cases.
