Long tipped as a potential successor to Daniel Craig as James Bond, Idris Elba has now made it clear that the idea was never truly on the table. The British actor believes Bond should remain Bond.

Speaking candidly about the iconic 007 role, the 53-year-old actor told GQ: “I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing.” According to Elba, James Bond “was written how he was written for a reason.”

Elba Wants Bond to Stay True to Its Roots

While flattered by years of speculation, Elba believes a Black Bond would not be universally embraced around the world. “Bond is huge all over the world. And audiences won’t all go for a Black male, an African male, playing him. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period,” he said.

The actor also insisted that he was never seriously considered for the role. “It was never real. It was always just a rumor,” Elba explained, putting an end to years of casting speculation.

Elba further argued that the franchise should avoid changing too much. “Bond is so unrealistic that a little realism can be a good thing, but let’s not try to make it woke. We need to stay true to what it is: a form of escapism. Let’s not try to satisfy everyone’s tastes. Let’s just be Bond.” Meanwhile, Amazon MGM Studios is reportedly searching for the next 007, with names such as Henry Cavill, Cillian Murphy, Jacob Elordi, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Callum Turner, and Harris Dickinson all linked to the role.
